JEAN-CHARLES LE LAY

Passionate about art drawing and plastic arts since my youngest age, I awakened my artistic sense from the age of 9 at the School of Fine Arts in Quimper, continuing at the Vauban-Kérichen technical school in Brest in the Applied Arts section.

In 1991 and 1992, I consecutively won two Prizes for Excellence in Plastic Arts, at the prestigious Concours Général*, which earned me the honor of receiving the warm congratulations of the Rectors of the Academy and the Minister of State, Education and Culture, Mr. Jack Lang.

*Concours Général high schools and professions is a Prize of Excellence which distinguishes the best studentsfrom France general, technological and vocational high schools. It promotes work that can serve as a reference for all classes.

I then had the privilege of joining the National School of Applied Arts and Crafts in Paris -ENSAAMA Olivier de Serres.

In 1994, ENSAAMA's interior architecture studio organized an exhibition entitled "Drawings of Rome" at the Center Chaillot Galliéra, Avenue George V - 75008 Paris, for which my drawings were chosen to illustrate the poster of announcement of the opening where they were also exhibited.

The same year, I was Winner of the Competition for the scenography of the annual Gala "Point Gamma" of the Ecole Polytechnique de Paris-Palaiseau, which is the biggest national student party.

Thus, for the implementation of my project, the theme of which was"Under the sea", I was in charge of creating, choosing and directing the team that helped me in this tremendous challenge, involving my stay on the X campus for an entire month.

In 1997, as part of National Service Cooperation, I had the opportunity to be recruited at the end of my studies by the French Cultural Center and the French Embassy in Cotonou in Benin, where I spent two fabulous, extremely rewarding years as a graphic designer & Communication manager.

I was thus able to actively participate in many cultural events, such as openings, the 3rd Book Fair in Benin, various concerts, plays and other live performances and meet with happiness artists from all origins and backgrounds, with whom I had the chance to work: Louis Chédid, Oscar Kidjo, Le Jeune Ballet de France, the Malian star Oumou Sangaré, the Senegalese rappers PBS, the painters Sokey Edorh, Papisco Koudzi, as well as the famous Beninese visual artist Romuald Hazoume.

On my return to my native Brittany, trained in the field and supported by my friend and mentor, the Quimper interior designer Dominique LE BERRE, I founded my architecture and space design agency in 2001, where For 18 exciting years, I worked as a business manager, interior designer, designer and project manager, carrying out more than 300 projects.

Expert in high-end residential architecture, follower of raw materials and the famous precept "function creates form" of the American precursor Louis Sullivan, I create and implement architecture that offers a simple, articulated and highlighted by light. 

Appreciated for my pencil stroke, my attentive listening and my interactive approach, I propose unique, harmonious and innovative projects, which offer their occupants neat, optimized and functional tailor-made spaces, where the aesthetics of the places is revealed by the light and attention to detail.

A pioneer in wood architecture, since 2005 I have participated in the establishment and local development of numerous achievements highlighted in the national specialist press.

Sensitive to the plight of homeless people, I decided to act by co-founding in 2017 the public interest association

"A villa in emergency-Home311", the subject of which made the front page of many media. 

This pioneering and innovative eco-solidarity project offers emergency housing designed from the recycling of refrigerated truck bodies.

As Vice-President and active volunteer member, I participated in the communication of this project to various potential patrons and I created the original website 1.0 of "Une Villa en Urgence", which I also ensured overall management during the first year, before handing over to a new team.

2023 sounds new to mechallenge linked to a deep need to return to the sources, back to basics, back to basics!

A necessary therapy through a new activity of artistic creation in order to reconnect with Mother Nature.

Passionate about Nature and especially the marine environment, it is naturally and simply that I focus my first artistic approach towards the hidden beauty of"sea leashes".

These many algae torn by the incessant flow of tides and storms are a visual wonder every day.

Their fragile beauty, the imagination that develops   around the ephemeral drawings that they form despite themselves and the nostalgia, the memories of iodized smells and moments spent on the beaches of my childhood in Brittany are a perfect subject.
